Top Virologist Warns of Another 100,000 Deaths

One of Germany's top virologists has warned that a further 100,000 people will die from COVID-19 if the country does not take stricter measures to contain the spread of the virus. Hendrik Streeck, director of the Institute of Virology at the University of Bonn, said that the number of deaths could reach 200,000 by the end of the year if the current trend continues.

Germany in the Grip of a Fourth COVID-19 Wave

Germany is facing a dramatic fourth wave of COVID-19 infections, with the number of cases rising sharply in recent weeks. Chancellor Angela Merkel has said that the country is in a "very serious" situation and has urged people to get vaccinated and take other precautions to protect themselves and others from the virus.

The Robert Koch Institute, Germany's public health agency, reported on Friday that the number of new COVID-19 cases in the country had risen by more than 50% in the past week, with over 50,000 new infections recorded in a single day. The institute also reported that the number of deaths from COVID-19 had increased by more than 20% in the past week, with over 1,000 new deaths recorded.

The German government has responded to the surge in COVID-19 cases by imposing a number of new restrictions, including a ban on large gatherings, a requirement to wear masks in public, and a curfew for non-essential businesses. The government has also launched a mass vaccination campaign, with over 60% of the population now fully vaccinated.

Despite the government's efforts, the number of COVID-19 cases in Germany continues to rise. Experts say that the country is likely to experience a difficult winter, with the number of cases and deaths continuing to increase.
